People hiking through woods Harpers Ferry West Virginia

Day 1

After arriving in West Virginia's Eastern Gateway, start the afternoon with a 5-mile round-trip hike to the beautiful Maryland Heights. While the hike is moderately difficult, the breathtaking views once you arrive at the top already make it a trip to remember. If you enjoyed that hike, stop by the Appalachian Trail Headquarters in Harpers Ferry to learn more and hike on the famed Appalachian Trail.

After hiking, you may want to unwind and relax at one of our quaint restaurants or taverns, or are you thrilled by the excitement of thundering hooves, ringing bells, and large Jackpots. If gaming is part of your adventure, the place to be is the new Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Now offering 85 new table games with a spectacular 27 table poker room, the new facilities coupled with the traditional horse racing and 5000+ slot machines, makes for an exciting night on the town.

Day 2

Rest well as Day Two starts with a rafting, tubing, or kayaking trip on the beautiful Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers offered by one of our four licensed rafting companies. Over 400,000 people each year embark on a rafting, tubing, or kayaking trip down the two rivers in Jefferson County alone… see what the rave is all about. Fishing is also available for those more inclined to pull smallmouth bass, perch, and catfish from the rivers banks.

Toward the end of Day Two or morning of Day Three, take a scenic bicycle ride along the C&O Canal and see transportation modes and lore of yesteryear. Bikes of all styles and sizes can be rented at one of the nearby bike rental shops. Don't want to peddle? Discover WV's Eastern Gateway in true freedom and style... rent a scooter or moped! Explore the back roads, and discover what we like to call "a history and outdoor lover's paradise!"
