A visit to this quaint, historic   Harpers Ferry
community, at the confluence of    National Historical Park
the Potomac and Shenandoah
rivers, is like stepping into the
past. Stroll the picturesque
streets, visit exhibits and
museums, or hike our trails and
battlefields, including a United
States armory and arsenal, and
the site of John Brown’s raid
that precipitated the Civil War.

Harpers Ferry was the first
command of Thomas “Stonewall”
Jackson and the site of three
Civil War battles, including the
largest battle in modern-day
West Virginia, involving over
40,000 troops, resulting in
both sides which resulted in the
largest surrender of US troops
during the Civil War.

Harpers Ferry played a key role
in the education of former slaves
through the establishment of
Storer College. Harpers Ferry
also hosted the civil rights
Niagara Movement that laid the
foundation for the NAACP.
