Harpers
Ferry

Stroll back in time to an historic and quaint village at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Harpers Ferry immerses you in history and nature. The two combine seamlessly inside Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Start here with a ranger-guided tour of the U.S. Armory and Arsenal held by John Brown and his army for three fiery days in 1859. Next, walk the campus of erstwhile Storer College, where a forerunner to the NAACP was shaped. Just steps from landmark sites such as these, epic hikes await: Cross the footbridge over the Potomac River to trace the historic towpath along the scenic C&O Canal, once the lifeline of communities in the region. Drop into the heart of the Appalachian Trail, where challenging climbs are rewarded with panoramas of the mystic Blue Ridge Mountains and the Potomac and Shenandoah river valleys below. Now that’s a way to discover it all.

These rivers create a world of adventure within Harpers Ferry. Spend a leisurely day plying placid waters on a stand-up paddleboard – or conquering raging, class-III rapids. River Riders can help you arrange either excursion or something different altogether, such as a zip-line tour through the verdant tree canopy. Like to fish? Angler’s Inn will guide you in an unforgettable day of trout-fishing in national forest streams, or angling for smallmouth bass on the town’s legendary rivers. (You can later retire to the outfitter’s Victorian-era bed-and-breakfast.)

When you’re ready to wind down, walk historic downtown Harpers Ferry to browse distinctive shops and enjoy a meal at one of the many inviting cafés. Then, check in with the folks at O’ Be Joyfull. Their Songs & Stories shows make you feel as though you’ve gathered around the piano in someone’s living room – a century-and-a-half ago! And their ghost tour, steeped in Harpers Ferry history, is positively thrilling.
